On Tuesday 19th April, Clyst Vale welcomed a very special guest: Rick Broadbent, an experienced sports journalist from The Times newspaper. A select group of years 7 and 8 boys were lucky enough to spend the day with Rick, learning all about sports journalism and the importance of good literacy skills for such a career. Organised as a joint initiative between the library and the literacy coordinator, this day proved to be a fantastic success. The boys spent some time writing commentaries and reports on famous sporting events, notably the rollercoaster Champion’s League final between Liverpool and AC Milan and Usain Bolt’s triumph at the World Championships in 2015. George Hooper, seen below, won a prize for the best sports report on a recent Leicester City match, winning an official companion to UEFA Euro 2016. The day culminated in a penalty shoot-out on the field, accompanied by live recorded commentaries, with some cracking shots from some of the students and two disastrous attempts from Mr Simpson and Mrs Foulds!
